In our 21st century world, with so much of business contact happening via technology, it’s more important than ever to make a conscious effort to connect with people in person. Email, social media, texting, etc., are great ways to start and/or build relationships. However, if you want to take a relationship to the next level, nothing makes the difference that personal contact makes. Successful people know that although there’s an increase in “virtual networking,” there continues to be literally hundreds of in-person networking events available. So how can you make the best of your business networking? How can you make that all-important, “good impression?”
Experts say that body language accounts for 55% of communication, so start with these simple tips:
Nothing attracts people more than your smile. A smile says you’re open, welcoming and warm. A smile invites people in. Be sure to consciously remind yourself to smile. As one of America’s most respected voices on personal and career success, Dr. Denis Waitley says, “A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is a caring, sharing person inside.”
- Give a Confident Handshake
In business networking, the first contact always includes a handshake. (After that, for many women in business networking, we quickly move on to a hug ) A handshake is generally the first way we physically connect. It’s also one of the initial ways we show confidence, so be sure to give a strong, confident impression by giving a strong, confident handshake. Beware the “finger shake,” where only the fingers are grabbed and given a fishy squeeze. I often run into men who shake my hand that way – like they aren’t supposed to give me the same full hand grip as they do a man. Ladies, let’s make that old school, old-fashioned handshake go away. Let’s show men that while we love being feminine, we’re also confident equals in the business world. Here’s how to give a confident handshake: Put your hand straight out, go for the web of the other person’s hand, give it a firm but feminine squeeze and smile.
- Make Eye Contact
When you smile and extend your hand, make eye contact. I’m not saying stare, I’m saying look warmly into the eyes of the person you’re meeting. You’re saying with your body language that you’re happy to meet them and open to wherever your conversation takes you.
By putting these tips into action, you’ll quickly establish a strong, confident impression and easily attract people to you. You never know when you might meet “The “One”
